What is Energetic Cord Cutting?

Energetic cord cutting is the intimate healing practice of consciously releasing the invisible energetic threads that tie you to people, situations, or patterns that no longer serve you. If you’ve ever tried to move on from something and found yourself pulled back even when you wanted to let go, you may have already felt one of those threads at work.

In energy healing and spiritual healing traditions, a cord is an invisible thread of energy that forms between you and something that has held significant meaning in your life. That something isn’t always a person. Cords can connect you to a relationship, yes — but also to a job you’ve outgrown, a community you’ve left, a substance you relied on, a belief you’ve been trying to shed, or even a version of yourself you no longer are.

Every cord forms for a reason. They develop through intense emotional experience — love, loss, trauma, longing, obligation, or repeated interaction over time. In that sense, cords aren’t failures or signs that something went wrong. They’re the energetic record of what mattered to you.

Cords don’t only form with people — they attach to anything that has held significant meaning in your life.

Healthy Cords vs. Draining Cords

Cords aren’t inherently good or bad — what matters is what they’re carrying. The same kind of bond, between the same two people, can hold both at once. A parent and child might share a cord of real love and safety, one that lets them feel connected even across distance, alongside a second cord woven from old guilt, control, or unspoken resentment — and that second cord pulls in a completely different direction than the first.

The goal of cord work isn’t to sever connection wholesale. It’s to develop enough awareness to tell the two apart, and use conscious intention to release only what’s no longer serving you.

Where You Feel It in the Body

Cords are often felt at specific energy centers, and this is true of nourishing and draining cords alike — though in my experience as a practitioner, it’s not necessary to know exactly where a cord is attached, so don’t worry if you can’t locate it.

A cord tied to grief or lost love tends to show up in the heart chakra — a tightness or ache in the chest, even when the underlying bond is a healthy one. Cords related to power, control, or an old job often register in the solar plexus. A common example: someone who spent years in a workplace where they felt chronically overlooked or undermined may find a familiar tension in their mid-section when something triggers the memory — long after they’ve moved on. That’s the solar plexus still holding what the mind believes it’s finished with.

Cords to family, safety, or survival instincts may be felt in the root chakra, deep in the belly or base of the spine. Paying attention to where you feel the pull can help you understand what the cord is actually carrying — and whether it’s one to tend or one to release.

What Cord Cutting Actually Means

Energetic cord cutting — or cord clearing, as some practitioners prefer — is a conscious, intentional practice of releasing the energetic hold that something has on you. It doesn’t mean erasing what happened. It doesn’t mean you stop caring. It means you’re choosing to stop feeding a connection that is costing you more than it’s giving.

You don’t need to be convinced it will work. You don’t need to feel spiritually ready, or hold any particular belief about energy. Simply becoming aware that something is pulling at you, and placing your attention on what you’d like to release, is genuinely enough.

Where intention goes, energy flows — and that’s true whether or not you believe it.

The awareness itself is already the beginning of the work. For some people this happens once. For others, especially with deep or long-standing connections, the practice unfolds over time. There’s no wrong pace. The point is simply to reclaim your own energy — to step into what many in the energy healing world call spiritual sovereignty — and give yourself room to heal, grow, and be fully present in your life now.
