How to Cut Energetic Cords: A Step-by-Step Guide

Learning how to cut energetic cords doesn’t require special tools or formal training — cord cutting is, at its heart, an intentional practice that asks only for a quiet moment, a clear intention, and a willingness to acknowledge what you’ve been carrying. Whether you’re approaching this as a holistic healing practice or simply as a way to stop feeling emotionally tethered to something that’s ended, the process is the same.

You also don’t need to believe in it fully for it to work. You don’t need to feel ready, or spiritually prepared, or even entirely convinced. Awareness and intention are genuinely sufficient — the simple act of noticing what’s pulling at you and choosing to place your attention on releasing it is already doing something. Where intention goes, energy flows. The practice doesn’t require your faith. It only requires your intention and awareness.

An openness to allowing Divine support will amplify your clearing, and is highly recommended (but not required).

This process works whether you’re releasing a cord to a person, a job, a substance, a habit, a group, or a belief. The steps are the same. The only thing that changes is what you bring forward in your mind and intention.

Before You Begin — Optional: Invite Divine Assistance

Before moving into the steps, you may wish to take a moment to invite Divine support into your process. Throughout this work, you are supported not only by your own intention but by benevolent, Light-aligned intelligences who work in harmony with your Highest Good — angelic beings, archangels, spirit guides, elemental energies, and other forms of loving, supportive consciousness.

They do not override your Free Will, and they don’t do the work for you. They help facilitate, guide, and amplify the process — working gently in alignment with your system, your readiness, and what you are truly prepared to release and receive.

If it feels right, offer a quiet invitation or a moment of gratitude for their support before you begin.

“I invite the Healers and Helpers to assist and support me in this cord cutting.”

Step 1 — Get grounded

Before you begin, settle your body. Take three slow breaths while focusing on your heartspace — in through the nose, out through the mouth. Feel your feet on the floor. You want to feel present and steady before doing intentional inner work. If your mind is racing, that’s okay. Just take a few moments, and let your body know it’s safe.

If needed, literally tell your body: “You are safe, I am safe, We are safe.” Repeat this mantra while keeping your attention on your heartspace until you feel calm and steady.

Step 2 — Identify what you’re releasing

Choose one thing to work with. It might be a relationship that ended painfully. A job that consumed your identity. A drinking habit you’ve been trying to break. A community you left. A version of yourself you’ve been holding onto. A belief — “I’m not lovable,” “I’m not safe” — that’s been running in the background for years.

Bring it gently into awareness. You might notice where you feel it in your body — your chest, your stomach, your shoulders, the base of your spine. You don’t need to analyze it — just notice.

If you don’t feel it anywhere specific, that’s okay too. Keep going, you can do this.

Step 3 — Optional: Acknowledge what the cord carried

Before you release something, take a moment and see if you can recognize what it gave you — even if what it gave you was complicated. A cord to alcohol may have offered relief, social ease, or a way to numb what felt unbearable. A cord to an old job may have supported your sense of purpose and belonging. A cord to a painful relationship may have carried real love alongside the hurt.

You’re not justifying anything. You’re simply being honest — and that honesty makes the release cleaner.

Step 4 — Set your intention

Instead of working to figure out how many cords are present, it’s most supportive to simply include within your intention to release “any and all” which no longer serve you.

Say quietly in your mind, or out loud:

“*I release any and all cords between myself and this [person / job / substance / belief / situation] that do not serve my very Highest Good.

*I release them all now, fully and completely, and I fill the space they once occupied in my life with the energy of unconditional love and support.

*I reclaim my energy and declare my sovereignty from this now — and that is so.”

Step 5 — Visualize the release

Feel, or simply imagine, the cord softening from the inside of your heartspace — loosening, dissolving. No force, no tearing. Just a quiet unwinding, like a held breath finally let go.

Step 6 — Fill the space

Don’t leave the space empty. Breathe in and imagine warm light — golden, green, white, whatever comes to mind — filling the place where the cord was attached. You are not losing a part of yourself. You are reclaiming your energy.

Step 7 — Close with care

Thank yourself for doing this work, and take a few more breaths.

When you’re ready, open your eyes, move your body gently, and drink some water. Give yourself a little time before jumping back into your day.

Repeat as often as you need to. There is no limit, and there is no failure in returning to the same cord more than once. Some things run deep — and that’s not a sign the practice isn’t working. It’s a sign that the spiritual healing is real.
