Your Body Knows Before Your Mind Finishes Its Sentence

Bring a decision to mind — any real one you’re carrying right now — and watch what happens in your body before you’ve finished forming the thought.

Something answered. It always does. You might call this your Body Intuition, or your felt sense of yes and no.

This is the most practical intuition skill I know, and it takes ten seconds to use. The body reads truth faster than the mind can narrate, and it reports in a simple, physical language: expansion and contraction.

The Two Responses

Expansion feels like: the breath deepening, becoming light. Chest and shoulders softening. Energy rising or steadying. A subtle lean toward. Ideas arriving on their own. An inner quality of more room.

Contraction feels like: the breath going shallow. Jaw, shoulders, or stomach tightening. Energy dropping. A subtle pull back. The mind going effortful. An inner quality of less room.

That’s the primary vocabulary here. Your body has been speaking it your entire life — every invitation, every commitment, every possibility has been getting a physical yes or no all along. The only thing missing was the pause, and know-how, to read it.

The Ten-Second Reading

Before deciding anything of consequence:

  1. Pause. One breath.
  2. Bring the option fully to mind — as if it’s already real. You said yes. It’s on the calendar.
  3. Read your body, not your thoughts. Not your opinions about the option — the body’s response to it. How does it feel? Deeper breath, or more restricted? Lean foward, or pull back?

That’s it. Like any skill, it’s often clumsy the first week or so, yet becomes reliable through repetition. And it’s honest in a way the thinking mind often isn’t — the mind can argue itself into anything, but the chest doesn’t take sides. It just reports.

One familiar version of this you may already know: the yes that feels fine in the moment, followed hours later by a quiet sinking when the commitment resurfaces. That sink is data. It is your body showing you that that yes had really wanted to be a no. Collect enough of those readings and the consultation starts happening before the answer — which changes everything.

One Caution: Read the Thing, Not the Fear Around It

Here is where many readings get distorted, and it’s worth being aware of:

“Teaching a class” may expand you, while “being judged while teaching a class” contracts you. Those are two different readings — one of the direction, one of a fear about the direction.

So separate them. Read the thing itself first: the work, the practice, the path, imagined going beautifully. Then, separately, notice the fears around it. The next article in this series is devoted entirely to that second reading — how to tell the fear that means no from the fear that means growth — because they feel nearly identical and lead in opposite directions.

For now, just practice the split: the thing and the fear about the thing deserve to be read on their own.

Why This Is Intuition

Some people hesitate to call a body reading “intuition” — it seems too simple, too physical. But this is exactly how intuition prefers to arrive: not as a voice from elsewhere, but as your own system — the living expression of your own Soul — answering truthfully before the thinking mind can edit the answer.

The expansion is recognition. Something in you knows what supports your path and what doesn’t — knows it at a level deeper than logic, accessing the inherent knowing of which next steps align best with your personal Divine Path. The body is simply where that knowing surfaces first. Trust it the way you’d trust a friend who has never once lied to you. Maybe there’s been some misunderstandings before, some resistance to accepting the wisdom – but your body has never lied to you.

If the Reading Says Yes

Practice on small things this week — which route to walk, which invitation to accept, which of two books to open.

Let the skill build where the stakes are low, so it will be steady when the stakes are high.

And enjoy the journey! Let it be fun. <3
